Role of schools in supporting mental health and emotional wellbeing
Children and young people who feel cared for and valued are much more likely to be happy and do well in life. Children who know themselves well and have self-respect are more likely to be resilient and strong, cope with change and challenge in life, and make good choices. It is important that all children and young people to feel safe and secure and develop the confidence and skills that contribute to positive health outcomes.
The mental, emotional, social, and physical wellbeing of everyone within a learning community should be positively developed by fostering a safe, caring, supportive, purposeful environment that enables the development of relationships based on mutual respect.
Mental and emotional wellbeing is a key element of the health and wellbeing experiences and outcomes within the Curriculum for Excellence and is supported across the curriculum and throughout the learning environment. Mental, emotional, social and physical wellbeing are essential for successful learning.
Some examples of what is covered in this part of the curriculum are: children learn to recognise and express feelings, understand how feelings affect how we behave, know where to get help and support and how to manage stressful situations.
