Warts are caused by a virus that lives on the skin. Many people carry the virus and it causes small rough lumps to appear on areas over their body.

There are different types of wart virus and unfortunately a few of these types can affect your genitals, penis, vagina and your anus. Some people who carry the virus on their skin will never have warts so will never know they have it. They can still however give it to other people without knowing it.

It is spread through skin-to-skin contact and a lot of people have been in contact with the virus from weeks to years before they develop warts so you can never tell where they have come from. Warts on the genitals can be seen all over but are usually found under and around the foreskin, around the outside of the vagina and at the back passage - anus (this does not mean the person has been involved with anal sex). Sometimes they are found inside the vagina on the cervix which is the opening to the womb.

The most common treatments include:

Liquid nitrogen that is a very cold solution that is sprayed on by a doctor or nurse

Podophyllin paint that is applied at the clinic or some forms are given away for the person to use at home for three days a week, morning and night until the warts go away or they return to the clinic for a check

Laser treatment or surgery can be used but only in extremely bad cases

Other creams are sometimes used to encourage the person's immune system to help with the treatment but these creams as with the other treatments are not suitable for everyone.

Unfortunately warts after treatment can return if you become stressed, tired or run down as the virus is affected by your immune system.
