This is a sexually transmitted infection that is on the increase especially in young people. Chlamydia ’s a very clever little bug that a lot of people do not know they have because it often has no symptoms.

On occasion some people do get symptoms of Chlamydia and these can be things like:

Pain when trying to pass urine or when having sex

A discharge coming from the end of your penis and pain in your testicles (balls)

A noticeably heavier discharge from your vagina or bleeding at different times than your periods or after having sex.

The only way you will know you have it is to come in and get a test. The test isnÕt anything to worry about as it usually just involves passing urine into a small container that is then sent to a laboratory. The results are available in a maximum of one week

If you have symptoms, this can be a sign that chlamydia is present but might also mean other infections are too, so sometimes in these cases other tests will be carried out as well as the urine test. This could involve using small cotton buds and taking what is called a swab from the tip of your penis or from the inside of your vagina. People who have anal sex might also have a swab taken from their bum. Hopefully all this info hasnÕt made you panic because Chlamydia can be treated with antibiotics that are given if the test comes back positive. It involves taking 4 capsules that are taken with water.

If you have any of the symptoms described or are in the process of being tested for Chlamydia then you should avoid any sexual contact until you have the go ahead from the doctor. You might want to think about telling people you have had sex with if you are positive so they can go and get treatment. If in a relationship do not have sex until both of you have the all clear.
