Pornography

Pornography is sexually explicit material intended to stimulate sexual excitement. This includes both commercially generated as well as self and peer generated content.

Young people have told us that pornography is inescapable really common and that this is considered to be a normal everyday part of life, although not considered by all to be positive. A lot of young people, particularly boys, are using porn to learn about sex and relationships.

Pornography influences young people’s ideas of what they should expect from sex in ways that are often not realistic or healthy; young people told us that it creates pressure to look and act a certain way defined by porn that they are often not comfortable with.

Pornography showing male-female sexual activity usually has more emphasis on male pleasure than female and a lot of content shows violence towards women.

Good sex is based on mutual consent, mutual respect, mutual pleasure and safer sex practices (using condoms).  Most of the sex shown in pornography is not.

We don't think when we see an action or superhero movie that what we are watching is actually real - porn is just as unrealistic but unfortunately some young people are not able to separate the facts from the harmful fiction of pornography.

You might find it useful to see how we discuss pornography on the youngpeople@sandyford site.
