Sexual orientation

Becoming an adult should be an exciting time for your child but working out how to define themsleves, to find out where they fit in and where they don't can be hard for you and them. It can be a confusing time, including not being clear about their sexual orientation. It may take time for some people to understand their sexual feelings - that's OK.

  • Parents enquiry is a voluntary organisation offering helplines run by a group of parents of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender children. Providing help, information and support for parents and families of LGBT childrenn http://www.parentsenquiryscotland.org/
  • LGBT Youth Scotland gives information and support on their website at http://www.lgbtyouth.org.uk LGBT Youth give advice, support and information by text message directly to your mobile phone.  Regardless of where you are in Scotland, you can send a text asking for details about groups, events, or for information about coming out tips, help about your mental health and much more. All you need to tell us is your age and where you are. All texts are picked up by trained youth work staff who can help you out at the touch of a button. Text "info" and where you are to 0778 148 17 88.
  • Strathclyde Gay & Lesbian Switchboard gives support and information on its helpline. Phone 0141 8470447 every night from 7pm to 10pm.

Learning that your son is attracted to men can be unsettling.  You might be completely fine, but many fathers find this news difficult.  A leaflet titled "Dad, i've got something to tell you" gives answers to some of the questions you might have when you find out "my son is gay".
